Early Day Motion - Equitable Life

October 16, 2009 2:00 PM

On Monday 19th October there will be two very important debates on the Liberal Democrat Opposition day.

1. How the Government has betrayed the Equitable Life policyholders. This has been initiated by following an Early Day Motion by Vince Cable which has been signed by 331 MPS including over 100 Labour and 100 Conservative MPs

You can read the text of the early day motion by following the link below.

2. Government's failure of Leadership in the climate crisis will be led by Simon Hughes.

Commenting on the recent High Court ruling quashing the Government's decision to reject findings made by the parliamentary ombudsman's report into Equitable Life, Liberal Democrat Shadow Chancellor, Vince Cable said:

"The court's decision to overturn the Government's baseless rejection of the Ombudsman's report is very welcome.

"The Treasury's disgraceful foot-dragging has compounded the misery of former policyholders, who have been treated in an unjust fashion.

"Since the events of 2000, at least 30,000 people have died waiting to receive the compensation to which they are entitled.

"331 MPs from all sides of the House have backed a motion urging the Government to accept the Parliamentary Ombudsman's recommendations on compensating Equitable Life policyholders.

"This ruling reiterates the importance of the Liberal Democrats' Opposition Day debate this Wednesday which will urge the Government to act now to rectify this festering injustice."
