The Election So Far

April 28, 2010 11:00 PM

The election has really come alive for the Liberal Democrats in the High Peak since the Leader's debate where Nick Clegg's set our priority to create a fairer Britain with fair taxes, a fair chance for every child, a fair deal by cleaning up politics and a fair future by creating sustainable jobs .

There have been five all party Hustings where my message that Liberal Democrats are honest about the tough choices that will be needed to cut the deficit has been very well received.

Liberal Democrat policy of Fair taxes provides that the first £10,000 you earn will be tax free - an average tax cut of £700 for most people and completely freeing 3.6 million low earners from income tax.

A fair chance for every child means an investment of £2.5 billion in schools, targeted to help struggling pupils. Head teachers will be free to spend it as they wish in the best interests of their children.

A fair deal to restore and protect British civil liberties will give you the right to sack corrupt MPs. Liberal Democrats will introduce a fair voting system so that every vote counts not just those in marginal seats. No MP will be returned with less than 50% of the vote cast.

A fair GREEN future will be guaranteed by investing £400 million to create 100,000 jobs building new affordable houses and insulating existing ones. Liberal Democrats, led by Vince Cable, will break up the banks so that never again will taxpayers have to underwrite high risk banking. And we will force the banks to lend responsibly.

Our proposals will get the economy moving. But we must stabilise Britain's finances to deliver these promises. I make no excuses for being a bit nerdy about the numbers - too many politicians are shying away from talking about cuts when we need to be open and honest. Our fair tax policy will be fully paid for by closing loopholes that unfairly benefit the wealthy and polluters, including a mansion tax on houses worth more than £2 million. This will help to close the gap between the better and worse off, in stark contrast to Conservative proposals to give tax breaks to the most wealthy.

These core manifesto policies will allow the people in the High Peak the opportunity to plan ahead for a better future. My own ideas with regards to sustainable jobs, more social housing, improved rural public transport, immediate help for hill farmers and lower business rates will all make the High Peak an even better place to live.

Those people who know me, and those who have spoken to me or met me during this election campaign, warm to the Liberal Democrat message of change....Not the sort that the Tories offer....REAL change, with hope and fairness for the many not the few.

f people in the High Peak want to move away from the same old Political dogma of Labour and the Tories we offer a new way forward. After over a hundred years in the High Peak and sixty five years in Britain of the "Same old Politics" with policies that have failed, and promises that have been broken

NOW is the time to vote Liberal Democrat.
