Posters to deter trick or treaters

October 27, 2010 12:00 AM

POLICE in the High Peak are handing out free posters to discourage trick or treaters from calling on residents. People who don't want to be visited can display the posters in their front room windows or doors. Officers are also giving posters to shop keepers which tell customers that eggs and flour will not be sold to anyone under the age of 16.

Youth Development Manager, Sgt John Coxhead, said: "We hope that if youngsters are out trick or treating in their area, they will pay heed to these posters when they see them on display. Elderly or vulnerable people can find it distressing when they have unexpected callers on their doorstep at night."

People who would like a trick or treat poster should contact their local Safer Neighbourhood team on 0345 123 3333 or visit www.derbyshire.police.uk to find out who is on their team.

Posters can also be found at police station enquiry offices and Neighbourhood Watch co-ordinators have been given copies.

Shopkeepers who want egg and flour posters should call their local Safer Neighbourhood team. Alternatively, both posters can be downloaded from the police website.

Derbyshire police and their partners are organising a range of activities for youngsters during the Halloween and bonfire period so they have an alternative to trick or treating.

The events, which include a film screening in Tideswell, are part of Operation Relentless, a six-week initiative in which officers will work with organisations across the county, such as councils and the fire service, to target anti-social behaviour.

Event details can be found on www.derbyshire.police.uk.
