East Midland member elected Chair of Ethnic Minority Liberal Democrats

February 14, 2011 11:16 AM

Joining the Liberal Democrats was for Issan Ghazni about making a difference and creating a fair and equal society. This he managed to achieve during his time as National Diversity Advisor to the Party, devising structures and policies to promote pluralism within the Party.

His election as Chair of EMLD from 2011 will ensure he is able to continue to work for ethnic minorities within the Party. It is one of the aims of EMLD that in time our elected representatives in Westminster will better reflect Britain of the 21st century.

Issan said:

"As incoming chair, I'd like to thank Baroness Meral Hussein-Ece for her great work and inspirational leadership over the past 3 years. She has built a strong Executive of 12 people, all from very diverse backgrounds. With the modest funding received from the Party, EMLD has provided value for money many times over, from hosting of fringe events at Conference to the identification of the New Generation of candidates."

Other members of the new executive include:

Vice Chairs: Nader Fekri, James Jennings and Mohammed Shafiq;

Secretary: Jonathan Hunt;

Membership Secretary: Sven Griesenbeck;

Treasurer: Godfried Gyechie

Other Executive members: Aquila Chowdhury, Merlene Emerson, Brian Haley, Lester Holloway, Joseph Lee and Rabi Martins

Hon President: Nick Clegg MP

Hon Vice-Presidents: Simon Hughes MP and Brns Meral Ece
