Wanted - Homes for Young People. But

By Councillor Edith Longden

Cllr Edith LongdenMany families tell us they are concerned that their young people cannot afford to live here and are are forced to move away from this area.

In the last five years no 'affordable' houses have been built locally. However ten 'affordable' homes are now under construction for the Peak District Rural Housing Association in Chinley, across the road from Alderbrook. This is likely to be named 'Alders Meadow'.

At the same time there is controversy about proposals for large scale housing developments, including greenfield sites.

Crossings Road

There is a proposal to build 100 dwellings at the Manchester Road/Crossings Road corner. There would be a proportion of 'affordable' homes. This is a 'greenfield' site although 'brownfield' sites remain unused.

Under the previous Government's regional plans many new houses could be scheduled for the Chapel area over the next 20 years. 'Chapel Vision' are holding meetings to discuss the wider issues, at Combs Village Hall, 7th March and Chapel Town Hall, 16th March, both at 7.15pm.

Dorma Site

It seems likely that there will be applications for further housing on the former Dorma site. This is a big site and building on any large scale would cause serious access and infrastructure problems.

What are your views?

The recent consultation on new development supported only small scale developments. Perhaps at Brittania Mill?
