Blow to station’s redevelopment

Buxton Fire Station to be redeveloped

PLANS to redevelop the current home of Buxton's Fire Station have been dealt a blow after a proposal for 21 homes was rejected.

While High Peak councillors welcomed proposals to use the Compton Grove site for housing the submitted plans met with strong criticism from members.

Councillor Linda Baldry the Development Control Committee: "I think the application fails at virtually every level - affordable housing, trees, highways, car parking.

"Obviously the applicant hasn't taken on board pre-application discussions."

Liberal Democrat Councillor Michael Harrison said: "We have been on a site visit here today and the issues are clear. We all want to encourage brownfield sites being redeveloped and this is a sustainable site.

"The applicant has put forward insufficient affordable housing not consistent with policy; parking provision is inadequate and the design and materials really not suited to this area. And the layout for the affordable housing, concentrating these houses in one location, is inappropriate."

The proposed 21 home development included four affordable homes - ten per cent below the council's planning guidelines.

The application was unanimously refused on six grounds by members of High Peak's Development Control Committee at their meeting on Monday.

•The fire station at Compton Grove is to be replaced with a new purpose built fire station on Staden Lane that will also provide a base for mountain rescue and cave rescue services.

Work is now well advanced on the £3.4 million development due to be completed in May.
