The LGBT Liberal Democrats today warmly welcomed the announcement by Lynne Featherstone, Liberal Democrat Home Office minister, that the government is consulting on equal marriage for all. Full marriage equality is an official policy of the Liberal Democrat party and an area which the LGBT group has long campaigned for.
"Although there is still work to do to ensure everything that is being consulted on ends up becoming law, we're very pleased that our equal marriage campaigning last year has bought many organisations on board and generated enough debate that we're finally seeing this happen" said Adrian Trett, chair of LGBT Liberal Democrats this morning. "It is notable that this consultation is not just on allowing same-sex marriage for the lesbian, gay and bisexual communities but also access to civil partnerships for mixed-sex couples."
Sarah Brown, head of the LGBT Liberal Democrats Trans Working Group also commented: "I'm particularly pleased that this consultation includes an end to the disgraceful practice of forcing transsexual people to dissolve their marriages to receive full recognition. As well as being emotionally very difficult for many happily married couples, it can cause real problems with pensions."
Please see our Get Involved page for details of how to promote the consultation and take part!
