High Peak Liberal DemocratsBill Newton Dunn, local East Midlands Euro-MP, is calling for greater awareness and action against animal suffering in zoos across Europe ahead of National Zoo Awareness Day on 31st August.
Bill commented,
"We must reduce animal suffering in zoos across Europe.
"Earlier this year I hosted an event in the European Parliament at which The Born Free Foundation unveiled their investigations into the conditions in zoos in different European countries. There is considerable evidence that in some places rules intended to uphold standards are not being enforced.
"When people think of zoos they imagine enjoyable days out. However we should keep in mind that many animals live out a miserable existence in zoos. Increased public awareness of the harm some zoos do to animals' physical and mental health will help promote action to improve the lives of those animals in zoos.
"In the European Parliament I am working to shine a spotlight on the conditions in Europe's zoos and to garner action from national governments and the European Union to put an end to animal suffering in zoos."
