High Peak Liberal DemocratsOn Tuesday the 27th of September the European Parliament passed a non-legislative recommendation on road safety. In order to reduce road casualties part of the resolution recommended the responsible authorities to introduce speed limits of 30 km/h in residential areas.
This has led to a host of MEPs, including East Midlands tory MEP Emma McClarkin, attacking the EU with newspapers peddling the story to the public.
However, those MEPs rushing to the press to highlight an example of Brussels dictating rules to the UK are guilty of misinforming constituents to meet their own eurosceptic ends.
Bill Newton Dunn commented:
"This is not a move by Brussels to create a 20mph speed limit in residential areas. This is a report, not a law, by an MEP in the European Parliament which recommends a 20mph speed limit in residential areas to reduce road casualties. It is totally up to the Member States of the EU whether they want to take notice of the proposal."
"MEP Emma McClarkin should be ashamed of herself for blowing the story out of proportion and spreading misinformation about the EU and European Parliament among her constituents in the East Midlands."
"Such MEPs and the press owe it to the people of the East Midlands to get their facts right!"
