Lynne has written in support of equal marriage
Writing in the Daily Telegraph, Lib Dem MP and Equalities Minister Lynne Featherstone has reiterated her support for the Government's forthcoming consultation on how to introduce equal civil marriage. She says, "This is about the underlying principles of family, society and personal freedoms."
The Government's consultation will precede legislation during this Parliament to introduce at minimum equal civil marriage. The Liberal Democrats are the first and only major party to support marriage equality, and will be encouraging people to respond to the consultation to say that equal civil marriage should be introduced in the context of the Liberal Democrats' party policy for equal civil and religious marriage, and equal civil partnerships.
LGBT+ Liberal Democrats chair Adrian Trett added, "We are fully supportive of Lynne's hard work campaigning for equality both inside and outside Government. Our policy will permit those churches and faith organisations which wish to marry same-sex couples to do so, and leaves that debate to religions and their congregants rather than Government mandate."
