High Peak Liberal DemocratsOn Tuesday's debate in the House of Lords on Schools, Lord Rennard asked "whether the government will take steps to prevent the booklet Pure Manhood: How to Become the Man God wants You to Be being read as part of the school curriculum. Three Liberal Democrats Peers, Lord Rennard, Baroness Walmsley and Lord Avebury pressed the government to act including a further specific question asked by Lord Rennard on "what specific actions the government might consider to prevent the distribution in any school of literature that is clearly homophobic, undermines HIV prevention campaigns and is likely to incite further homophobic bullying?
Unfortunately the question received some less than satisfactory responses from both the Conservative government Minister and other Peers including one Labour Peer who said that such literature should not be banned at all.
Subsequently, Lord Rennard has raised the issue again with the Minister, who says that the 2010 Equality Act does not cover the curriculum, however Lord Rennard has pointed out "that the government must consider again the problems with publications such as this is in the review of the curriculum that is currently taking place, in the meantime to make it plain to all schools that such literature is not acceptable if distributed uncrtitically.
Chair LGBT+ Lib Dems Adrian Trett welcomes Lord Rennard raising this issue in the House of Lords, and says "that these homophobic booklets should no longer be distributed to schools under any circumstances and the teaching of these issues must be executed in a format of open, tolerant, responsible and respectful manner which we would expect the teaching profession to comply with.
