High Peak Liberal DemocratsLooking ahead to the Budget, Co-Chair of the Liberal Democrat Parliamentary Treasury Committee, Stephen Williams said:
"The Budget on Wednesday has to be a budget for the many, not the few.
"Already, the Coalition Government is doing the right thing and helping average working people. Thanks for the Liberal Democrats 25m people across the UK and 1.8m in the East Midlands will receive a £130 tax cut this April and we'll have lifted 1.1m (82,000 in the East Midlands) people out of paying Income Tax all together.
"In these difficult times, it is clear the Coalition Government must now do more to help those struggling with bills and the rising cost of living. Going further and faster towards raising the Income Tax threshold to £10,000 is a straightforward way of achieving this objective.
"By lifting more than 2.5m people in the UK out of paying tax altogether and giving millions more a substantial tax cut we give real support to low and middle earners - a helping hand during tough times."
