Nick Clegg has spoken onstage at London Pride, and is a keen supporter of marriage equality.
Deputy Prime Minister and Leader of the Liberal Democrats, Nick Clegg MP, has issued a statement of support to the Coalition for Equal Marriage. He says:
The Liberal Democrats fully support this Equal Marriage campaign which champions the right for all people, regardless of their sexual orientation or gender, to be able to love and marry whoever they choose. Many other countries have taken this progressive step and I think it's about time Britain joined them.
Our party has long fought for the rights of the lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender community and I am proud that it is the Coalition Government that has committed to legislating for equal marriage by 2015.
The Coalition Government, the Liberal Democrats and I remain wholeheartedly committed to lifting the ban on equal civil marriage.
We are currently consulting on how, not whether, to introduce proposals for equal marriage and I want to encourage everyone to make sure that their voices are heard during this time.
Nick's statement comes as many Conservatives are calling on the Coalition to go back on its pledge to introduce equal civil marriage within this Parliament. The Lib Dems are the only major party with equal marriage as party policy, after LGBT+ Lib Dems introduced a policy motion to conference which was overwhelmingly supported by party members.
The Government's consultation closes on 14th June, and LGBT+ Lib Dems have prepared a guide to the consultation and created freely-available flyers in support.
