High Peak Liberal DemocratsOn the 16th of August 1819 a peaceful rally at St Peter's Fields, Manchester, of 60,000 pro-democracy campaigners men, women and children was attacked by armed cavalry resulting in 15 deaths and over 600 injuries.
Peterloo is such a significant part of Manchester's history and our fight for democracy. It's a disgrace there isn't already a fitting and permanent memorial.
I am glad that the Council has withdrawn their plans to erect gates to mark the event, but am still worried that the memorial is being decided behind closed doors by just three Labour Councillors.
This is Manchester's memorial, and there should be full consultation with the people of Manchester.
My colleague John Leech MP has submitted an Early Day Motion on the memorial, which can be found here.
Already, 15 MP's have signed the EDM, from 6 different political parties. I am writing to Manchester's Labour MP's to see if they will support the campaign, too.
The campaign's Facebook page can be found here
