High Peak Liberal DemocratsYesterday afternoon (17th October 2012) Cheadle MP Mark Hunter, Hazel Grove MP Andrew Stunell and Macclesfield MP David Rutley met with the Chancellor of the Exchequer, George Osborne, to push for the A555 Relief Road project to be started as soon as possible. The next phase of the scheme will link Manchester Airport and the A6 will help ease traffic congestion affecting thousands of local residents.
Although the Coalition Government approved the A555/SEMMMS road building scheme last November, progress has since been hindered by a number of factors. At today's meeting the 3 MPs pressed the case to the Chancellor to accelerate the progress now that all three of the local authorities involved have endorsed it.
Commenting, Mark said:
"After Cheshire East Council finally agreed to the scheme a few weeks ago, it is absolutely crucial that we do everything we can to make sure we get this road built as soon as possible.
"Residents face dreadful traffic congestion in the area every single day so we are determined to avoid unnecessary delays in the process of getting this road built.
"The Chancellor seemed very receptive to the case we put forward and I am extremely hopeful that we will see this road built sooner than currently expected.
"This is not just about the new road - the scheme will also create thousands of jobs in the area and it is through projects like this that the Coalition Government is investing to get our economy moving again."
