High Peak Liberal DemocratsLetter from Karl.J.Claridge - Corby to the BBC concerning David Cameron's latest intended proposal:
Following Neville Chamberlain's resignation in May 1940, it was none other than Winston Churchill that became Prime Minister, who, with his oratorical skills combined with a "Bulldog" tenacity & steadfast refusal to consider defeat or surrender, inspired, not only us British but, a fair portion of the World and helped lead us through those dark and troubled days.
Who does the Honourable Gentleman imagine will be assuming this auspicious role in today's "Modern Britain"? Surely not his good self? Although in fairness to Mr. Cameron - I do not believe I can think of one current party leader that could be truly up to the task - that alone as effectively as Churchill...
Then to the idea itself- Frankly it is absurd.
It is true that decisive action needs to be taken, but to segue the economic crisis of today with the circumstances of the Second World War is as ridiculous as it is misleading. The issues back then were about literal survival through forming a united front against a most veritable and dangerous threat from Adolph Hitler & the ideologies of his Third Reich.
It is not without a certain irony, I feel, that the very measures David Cameron is suggesting to implement to deal with "the economic equivalent of war" are not dissimilar to the methods resorted to by "Der Fuehrer", as well as numerous other Dictators around the World, namely the State limiting its citizens Rights to legally challenge government policies.
What will be suggested next I wonder? A National Curfew? Or Martial Law perhaps?
To quote Thomas Jefferson: "When the people fear the government, there is tyranny. When the government fears the people, there is liberty."
That which the Prime Minister so ashamedly refers to as "Time Wasting" is in truth an integral part of the democratic process and as such must be protected.
By giving people less time to apply for judicial review and having their chances of appeal halved he is attempting to "move the goal posts" to the governments own advantage, while making the opposition face higher fees, will merely limit options of the less fortunate while having the "advantage" of benefiting the rich, thus creating an elitist class system...
Just like the Tories to want to revert back to the "Good Ol' Days"!
This must not be permitted.
