I have serious problem with "We can end the elderly care lottery - Means-testing winter fuel payments could prevent old people losing their assets and their dignity" mainly because the maths do not seem to add up.
Statement "In fact, the winter fuel payment is an anomaly in our welfare system" The only reason it is an anomaly because the state pension is too low in the first place.
Statement "I received countless letters from the families of older people. These letters described, in heartbreaking detail, how elderly people across the country were facing the prospect of losing all that they had worked hard for to pay for care." "Hope that the scandal of thousands of elderly people being hit with catastrophic care costs of £100,000 or more would end."
£100,000 properties are long gone, on the other hand if the £100,000 is 65% of their assets then £50,000 cap would be 32.5% not 22% of their assets.
While I agree that those households with high income (where ever it comes from) should not get the winter fuel payments, there are many above the threshold for pension credit without being well off.
Let us not make the same mistake and make the relatively poor subsidise the relatively rich.
