Adrian Trett is Chair of LGBT Lib Dems
The day is breaking on one of the most important days for LGBT+ equality. The House of Commons will vote on the Second Reading of the Marriage (Same-Sex Couples) Bill today. Liberals have campaigned for nearly fourty years since the Liberal Party first agreed to support the Campaign for Homosexual Equality's Law Reform Bill in 1975. The Bill will provide same-sex couples with the right to marry. Those religious organisations who wish to opt-in to providing ceremonies can, and protects those that do not. It also allows married people who change legal gender to remain in their marriages without going through the process of divorce.
The current Bill does not fully comply with Liberal Democrat party policy. LGBT+ Lib Dems are working with the party's Parliamentarians on issues including mixed-sex civil partnerships, confiscated marriages and pension rights. However Liberal Democrats in Government will continue to improve the Bill as it goes through the parliamentary process.
Adrian Trett, chair of LGBT+ Liberal Democrats, said "I hope Tuesday will be a watershed day for equality, where a process will start which will end in the recognition of all loving marriages being equal whatever the genders of the couple. This will be an immense step forward for the journey of inclusion and equality."
