LGBT Lib Dems prepared a briefing for all Lib Dem MPs
Today, at 7:14pm on Tuesday 5th February, MPs in the House of Commons have voted (400 to 175) in favour of the second reading of Marriage (Same Sex Couples) Bill. As expected a large majority of Liberal Democrat MPs voted in favour of party and Government policy.
The Coalition Government has successfully passed the first vote on the Bill, despite the number of Conservative MPs who voted against equality. The Bill now begins its journey through the parliamentary process and Liberal Democrats on the Bill Committee will do all they can to improve the legislation where it falls short of Liberal Democrat policy.
Adrian Trett, Chair of LGBT+ Liberal Democrats said, "Today is an historic day for equality, and a very special day for LGBT+ Liberal Democrats. Our campaign is drawing near to the goals set out in September 2010. Thanks to the great support from especially our Leader and Deputy Prime Minister, Nick Clegg, former Equalities Minister Lynne Featherstone MP and current Minister for Women and Equalities Jo Swinson MP. We look forward to the improved Bill passing both Houses of Parliament and being brought into law as soon as possible."
