High Peak Liberal DemocratsAndrew Stunell MP is urging Stockport Council to 'get moving' with the next stage of the A555 after last week's end of a major consultation on the route.
"I'm delighted that literally thousands of residents have given their feedback on the A6 to Manchester Airport Relief Road. Now I want to see Stockport Council, Manchester City Council and East Cheshire Council get moving. The huge level of public response provides the feedback to help them quickly decide on a preferred scheme for the bypass. We need to see urgent action, with any detailed revisions drawn up and approved without delay."
Planning rules mean the revised scheme will have a second public consultation before the three councils consider final planning approval. Mr Stunell says that will give Stockport residents a second chance to put their views forward.
"It is important to get it exactly right, so listening to residents is the right thing to do. But the clear message from the general public is to get on with it and end the years of delays. I don't want any foot-dragging behind the scenes. If things go to the timetable we should see the final scheme published by the summer."
The proposed road will be a dual carriageway linking the A6 at Hazel Grove to the eastern end of the existing A555 at Woodford Road, Bramhall and from the western end of the existing A555 at Wilmslow road, Handforth to Manchester Airport. The scheme will also include a separate walkers and cyclist route running its full length next to the road.
