192 Goes Green: “Great news for the Grove!” – Local MP

February 19, 2013 1:52 PM

Hazel Grove' iconic 192 bus route is to get 40 brand new green buses in a £10 million bid to cut pollution along the busy A6 corridor into town.

Commenting, local MP Andrew Stunell said -

"This is one of the busiest bus routes in Greater Manchester, used by hundreds of Grovers every day. New state-of-the-art cleaner and greener buses will make travelling conditions better not just for passengers but for other road users as well. I'm delighted it's got Government backing."

Over the next three months the busy 192 will get 40 brand new hybrid vehicles. 12 were introduced on February 1st, a further 16 buses will be included from March 1st and the remainder later that month.

Stagecoach Manchester, the local bus operator, has put £7.8 million towards the investment, with the rest of the money, £3.5million, coming from the Government's Green Bus Fund. This is the largest investment into buses on a single route in Greater Manchester.

Christopher Bowles, managing director of Stagecoach Manchester, commented: "The commissioning of 40 new hybrid buses for the 192 route is yet another significant investment in our region-wide operations."

"This route is one of the most intensive services outside London and we hope that our initiative will be welcomed by all local residents."

"We will be developing and expanding our fleet and services further in 2013 to ensure that local residents can continue to enjoy excellent service, increased convenience and a greener, more environmentally friendly way of travelling."
