MP BACKS CAMPAIGN TO TACKLE WORLDWIDE HUNGER

February 27, 2013 1:43 PM

Hazel Grove's local MP, backed the 'Enough Food For Everyone IF' campaign in Westminster recently to pledge his support to tackle worldwide hunger.

It's predicted that by 2025 nearly 1000 million children and young people will have their life chances permanently damaged by the impact of childhood hunger, and malnutrition will be costing developing countries nearly £80 billion per year.

Commenting, Andrew said -

"I'm delighted to be backing the Enough Food for Everyone IF campaign - we really do have the opportunity to make 2013 an historic year by showing global leadership and delivering clear plans to tackle hunger and its root causes at the G8 and beyond. It is simply not acceptable that in a world where there is enough food for everyone, children are still growing up hungry - it must be stopped."

Improvements have been made. 14,000 fewer children are dying each day than in 1990. However hunger is threatening to reverse these achievements. Food prices are sky high, and the need for food banks has risen sharply even here in the UK.

Enough Food for Everyone's aims:

  • to ensure that small scale farmers can keep hold of their land to grow food.
  • to crack down on tax dodgers depriving poor countries of resources to ensure the right to food.
  • to work to global agreement on new sources of climate finance.
  • to fulfil our commitments of aid to developing countries and invest enough in agriculture and nutrition.

The IF campaign's aims are working towards the end result of ending hunger.

Ben Jackson, Chair of the Campaign said -

"We should be proud of the great progress we are making as a world to reduce poverty, but it is still the reality that in a world where there is enough food for everyone 1 in 8 people go hungry every day. This is nothing short of a scandal. We need a concerted effort from governments, civil society and philanthropists to tackle the root causes of this problem and together to ensure that no child has to go hungry."
