Lincolnshire Liberal Democrats Highways and Transportation Policy

The Liberal Democrats have made a major contribution to transport policy since 2010 with more investment in public transport than any previous government. However Lincolnshire's Draft Ten Year Transport Plan takes little notice of the coalition government's improvements. The draft plan also fails to adequately address the transport needs of the county's growth points, notably Grantham, Gainsborough and Boston.

Liberal Democrat councillors will:

1. Press for Lincolnshires road maintenance backlog to be cleared and then for the highways budget to be focused on need across the whole county, not just in those parts of the county connected to the A1.

2. Ask for replacement of Call Connect with community transport so that greater provision can be made available for the same budget. At present the Call Connect contracts use commercial operators whereas community transport uses volunteers and has a much reduced cost base.

3. Continue to call for the Lincoln to Sheffield rail service to be transferred from Northern to the East Midlands franchise.

4. Support the introduction of more trains connecting Lincoln to London with some trains starting at Cleethorpes and calling at Market Rasen and some originating at Doncaster and calling at Gainsborough Lea Road.

5. Support the extension of Capital Connect electric trains from Peterborough to Spalding.

6. Press for the development of a Lincolnshire wide travel card, valid on all bus and rail services in the county.

7. Call for a feasibility study for the introduction of a trolleybus network for Lincoln city.

8. Identify routes that can be developed into a rolling programme of safe cycling paths.

Liberal Democrats believe that good transport is the key to economic development and social mobility.
