High Peak Liberal DemocratsTorkington Primary School's unique Nurture Room has been praised by local MP Andrew Stunell, after a tour of the school last week.
Commenting, Andrew said -
"The Nurture Room provides a safe place for some quiet time out and helps make sure all children have a happy learning experience."
Mr Stunell met Head Teacher Mr Andy Buckler, school governors, staff and children in a whistle-stop tour of the school.
"I was impressed with what I saw and heard on my visit, and particularly in the way children are helped to build life skills and to be resilient. The work done in their outdoor 'Forest School' had me itching to join in, and I was delighted to hear they are sharing it with children from a school in Manchester as well."
Torkington Primary's Head Teacher, Mr Buckler commented -
"We were really impressed with Mr Stunell's appreciation of our philosophy that children learn most effectively when they are stimulated by an enriched curriculum which develops their emotional intelligence as well as their academic abilities."
The Forest School gives the children the opportunity to learn new practical skills, build their confidence and bond with team mates through a range of outdoor activities based in the woodland alongside the school.
The Nurture Room, also called the Thinc Room, aims to offer a comfortable environment for the children where confidence-building activities, imaginative role play and group discussions, to name a few, take place. The Nurture Room seeks to merge educational and therapeutic approaches, to provide school based interventions, which meet the social and emotional needs of children.
