High Peak Liberal DemocratsWe need "Government of the many not government of the money" Nancy Pelosi leaderof the Democrats in the US House of Representatives speaking in London on April 20th 2013. This also applies to the UK where lobbying is almost as bad as upon Capitol Hill.
Speaking of the latest revelation of parliamentarians taking cash Nick Clegg, Leader of the Liberal Democrat, said they were an "unsettling but not surprising" symptom of a political system "long crying out for head-to-toe reform".
"It's the political equivalent of Groundhog Day: MPs accused of abusing their position; businesses of getting too close,"
Nick has called for a register of lobbying organisations. A register would not be a "magical protection against an individual politician determined to behave unethically or inappropriately" and the overwhelming majority of lobbying was legitimate and served the public interest, Mr Clegg said.
"But clearly there are instances where access is abused - further undermining the already weak public trust in our institutions - and greater transparency is a key part of the antidote."
