PARLIAMENT’S PRAISE FOR STOCKPORT HYDRO

June 7, 2013 12:18 PM

Stockport's first hydro power scheme has been praised in Parliament. The innovative scheme which is providing power from twin turbines on the River Govt near Marple has been highlighted in a Parliamentary Motion tabled by local Andrew Stunell MP.

Mr Stunell wants the scheme to be show-cased by the Government as a national example of a successful community-led renewable energy scheme.

"It's a tribute to a huge amount of hard work by local volunteers, and by many people around the region who have put money into this social enterprise. The money it makes from selling electricity will be ploughed back into local communities, and of course it is clean and green, and a real planet-saver" says Mr Stunell.

Mr Stunell's Motion has been backed by Stockport MP Ann Coffey, and other Greater Manchester MPs including Liberal Democrat John Leech, MP for Manchester & Withington.

Stockport Hydro pioneer, Ben Alexander said -

"It was a real struggle at times to get the project up and running, but we are all absolutely delighted with its success. It is delivering 20% more power than we planned, and will make a real contribution to local community projects as well as generating plenty of power.

But I do want to see the red tape cut through. It was a nightmare for us, and I'm pleased that Mr Stunell's motion is pushing the Government to make it easier for projects like ours to succeed in future."
