High Peak Liberal DemocratsAndrew Stunell MP praised bee-lovers who have taken nearly 150 actions to save bees in Hazel Grove as part of Friends of the Earth's Bee Cause campaign.
Actions include planting bee friendly seeds, signing petitions and building 'bee hotels' to replace lost natural habitat.
Commenting, Andrew Stunell MP said -
"Bee-lovers really are creating a buzz. It's great to see people helping the Wall Mason Bee. And I'm doing my bit too by asking the Government to introduce a Bee Action Plan to tackle all major causes of bee decline."
"I am extremely concerned about the rapid decline in British bee numbers. They're not only an iconic part of our countryside; they play a vital role in pollinating our crops and flowers too. It's great news that Friends of the Earth is creating a buzz about these crucially important insects - I'll be doing all I can to help protect our bees in Stockport in 2013."
Friends of the Earth's Head of Campaigns, Andrew Pendleton, said
"We're delighted that Andrew Stunell is listening to people in Hazel Grove and has pledged to help save bees, especially the Wall Mason Bee. Bees are vital to our food supply, green spaces and economy, but they are in trouble. The Government must act urgently to stop their decline."
A new University of Reading report identifies parts of the North West as of key importance to the Wall Mason Bee and highlights the issue of habitat loss in the decline of bees across the region.
