High Peak Liberal DemocratsChief Secretary to the Treasury, Danny Alexander MP, has today re-stated government support for the next phase of the long awaited A555 Relief Road between Manchester Airport and the A6.
Cheadle MP, Mark Hunter, was in the Chamber of the House of Commons to hear the good news and Mr Alexander paid tribute to the tireless campaign the local MP has fought in support of the scheme.
Speaking immediately after the statement, part of the Coalition Government's Comprehensive Spending Review, in the House, Mark Hunter said: "Obviously I am very pleased that this vital project continues to enjoy support at the very top of government. People have waited so long for the benefits this scheme will bring for our currently traffic choked local roads and sometimes progress has seemed terribly slow.
"But, we are now firmly on track. Stockport Council is now conducting the second of two public consultation exercises which enable local people to have a real say in the details and there is still much work to be done before the expected planning application will be submitted this September.
"The current consultation finishes on 19th July and I urge all local residents, whatever their views, to have their say."
The previous consultation, earlier this year, attracted some 9,000 responses and a majority of seven-to-one in favour of the scheme. Stockport Council are also currently running a series of public exhibitions on the plans for the Relief Road at various locations around the area.
