High Peak Liberal DemocratsMark Hunter MP and fellow members of the House of Commons had the opportunity last week to sample the quality of food currently served in school restaurants across England and Wales and the Members were both surprised and very impressed with what was on offer.
The lunch was marking the launch of this year's National School Meals Week (NSMW) and promoting all that's great about school lunches including the benefits of our school children eating a healthy, nourishing and affordable meal on a regular basis. Education Catering body LACA's aim for this year's campaign, is for school caterers to provide access to every child, in the 21,000+ schools across England and Wales, to a free school lunch during National School Meals Week, (4th - 8th November). This will enable pupils to trial school meals, thus making it the biggest sampling exercise ever undertaken in the UK.
Three school chefs, all of whom have won the School Chef of the Year award, were serving the food to the guests; Pauline Gaty from the London Borough of Tower Hamlets, Alison Gann of Chartwells, working for Royal Borough of Windsor and Maidenhead and, Corinne du Preez of Caterlink, working for East Sussex County Council.
Mark Hunter took the opportunity to sign up to support the aims of National School Meals Week and were joined in the p icture by children from Chase Side Primary School in the London Borough of Enfield, who brought a youthful enthusiasm to the proceedings.
Cheadle MP Mark Hunter, commented that:
"I know well from my visits to schools all around the constituency just how far school food has come in recent years and how popular the new menus are with pupils. Politicians, head teachers and parents need to recognise the importance of providing our children with a healthy and affordable meal every day, and to work together to make it a reality. Later this year, National School Meals Week will be a great opportunity to raise awareness of this issue."
