STUNELL URGES STOCKPORT TO GET ACTIVE THIS SUMMER

July 24, 2013 1:41 PM

Local MP Andrew Stunell joined Stockport Ramblers on a walk to step forward to back 'Britain on Foot' designed to get more people in Stockport active outdoors, leading to a happier, healthier nation.

Britain on Foot could help add four years to the lives of Stockport residents, by inspiring those who are not active at the moment to try outdoor activities. Andrew has given his backing to the campaign and is encouraging the people of Stockport to get outdoors this summer.

Commenting, Andrew said - "Britain on Foot is a national campaign that is really easy to get involved in. Walking is such a simple route to a better lifestyle and it's so easy to get started. It improves your health and fitness, takes you to some beautiful places, and it's very cheap!"

"Here in Stockport,we are right on the edge of the Peak District, and we've got the Goyt Way and literally dozens of delightful walks nearer home, too. I celebrated with an eight mile walk with Stockport Ramblers this weekend. If you want to get started Britain on Foot will offer ideas, news of events and advice that will help people of all ages and abilities to start exploring the outdoors, wherever they live. I wholeheartedly support the campaign and hope that it proves to be a big success in Stockport."

Dave Sidgwick, Stockport Ramblers chairman, said:

"We know walking is one of the most accessible, achievable and enjoyable ways to get people in Stockport and Greater Manchester more active.

"There are beautiful places to walk all around this area. We have the countryside right on our doorstep and we are ideally placed for the Peak District, the Lake District, the Yorkshire Dales and North Wales. Andrew Stunell MP has joined us for a walk to discover firsthand the benefits of walking and we'd love for you to join us too."

One of the key objectives of Britain on Foot is to encourage existing outdoor enthusiasts to persuade relatives, friends and colleagues to explore the outdoors.

A major recent study demonstrated that doing just 150 minutes of light exercise a week (such as five 30 minute walks), can extend the average life span by over four years, with significant increases in life expectancy also recorded in those currently suffering from serious illnesses, such as cancer.
