STUNELL VISITS WERNETH’S YOUNG APPRENTICES
Andrew Stunell MP has been checking out Werneth High School students working on the school's young apprentice placement scheme.
The scheme helps pupils from years 9, 10 and 11 to prepare for the world of work.
Commenting, Andrew said -
"I'm campaigning to get many more apprenticeships offered in Stockport. The 100 in 100 days challenge is getting a brilliant response. But often employers are worried that some young people haven't got the basic skills and work ethic needed to make a start. This imaginative scheme gives a young person the opportunity to get out of school and experience the world of work and study first hand. It is great for them, and already proving its worth, with young people going on to serious vocational training when they leave school. Congratulations to the school and the staff for setting such a great scheme up."
The programme is for students who are disengaged from the normal route of secondary education and who can benefit more from a hands-on approach via a young apprenticeship.
Andrew visited the school and two of the placement employers in Bredbury.
"The young people were doing themselves proud, and the firms concerned were impressed with the way they were settling down to it. I've spoken to the Secretary of State in London to urge him to support schemes like this across the country. It is a brilliant alternative route for youngsters to start the route to a real career."
Margaret Roberts, Applied Learning Coordinator at Werneth School, commented -
"I was delighted to receive Sir Andrew on a visit to our school where he met with Yr 11 students, who have completed school and are moving onto Apprenticeships. Also, Yr 9 students, who are going to College in September for the first time."
"Sir Andrew is a great advocate for young people's success and development. I was flattered by his invitation to join his launch event of the Apprenticeship challenge following his visit. It was great to see more and more influential people looking at young people's needs for the future."
