“THE UK ECONOMY IS ON THE MEND!”

July 26, 2013 3:34 PM

Andrew Stunell MP welcomed the news that the UK's economy is now on the mend, after GDP figures were released yesterday.

This welcome news closely follows the announcements that crime is down, the UK's deficit has fallen by a third, 25 million people have received a large income tax cut and over 1 million new jobs have been created in the private sector just over the last three years.

Commenting, Andrew said -

"This is very good news for Stockport. We now have more people in jobs in the town than ever before, and nationally we have clearly turned the corner after five very difficult years.

"I'm pleased that construction has done particularly well in the last three months, as many local companies and workers depend on a healthy building sector. And we certainly need the extra homes that they will be putting up."

Key facts:

  • GDP increased by 0.6% in Q2 2013 compared with Q1 2013.
  • All four main industrial groupings within the economy (agriculture, production, construction and services) increased in Q2 2013 compared with Q1 2013.
    • Construction grew by 0.9%.
  • Largest contribution to growth (0.48 percentage points) from services sector.
  • Production also grew 0.08%, industries by 0.6% - and manufacturing increased by 0.4% following negative growth of 0.2% in Q1 2013.
