High Peak Liberal DemocratsAndrew Stunell MP backed the Send My Friend to School campaign in Westminster and urges Stockport schools to do the same. Woodley Primary School has already done just this!
Commenting, Andrew said -
"In Stockport we take a good school and a decent education for granted, but across the world there are millions of children who won't ever get that start in life. Our children are brilliant about this. They really do get it. I presented their campaign to Downing Street before, so I'm looking forward to a return visit to see the Prime Minister again this year, with a big stack of messages and pictures."
"Across the world we've made a good start, but there's a lot more to do."
"I've already received some brilliant pictures from children at Woodley Primary School and I very much look forward to hearing that other children from local schools are taking up the campaign for a proper education for children everywhere."
Malala Yousafzai, a young Pakistani girl, was shot last October, on her way to school by the Taliban for speaking out about the right for girls in her country to have an education. Malala has been recovering in the UK, and on her 16th birthday she made her first public speech in the UN. She was joined by hundreds of young people from around the world all campaigning for the rights of children worldwide to have access to a quality education.
In 2000 world leaders promised quality primary education for every child in the world by 2015, but there are still 57 million children missing out on a basic, primary education with millions more struggling to learn in crowded classrooms and with unqualified teachers. United Nations estimates show that there is a global shortage of 1.7 million teachers, with 1 million more professional teachers needed in Africa alone.
The Global Campaign for Education states that a good quality education for every child worldwide is not only a basic human right, but also one of the fastest routes out of poverty.
