High Peak Liberal Democrats
I'm on the party's new public services working group. There are four themes I'd like to see running through our approach across all the areas:1. Simplicity - simpler systems cost less to run, make fewer mistakes, give more power to individuals up against state bureaucracies and make it easier to hold people to account
2. Mutuals - we love saying we think mutual approaches are important but don't often translate that into action (think how few Lib Dem ministers - honorable exceptions such as Norman Lamb aside - have made progress on this).
3. Functioning IT - government IT, oh dear - but done well IT can be immensely liberating, mak...ing services better, cheaper and faster. Plenty of public services could do with that trio too - and there are some promising signs in the public sector (especially the Government Digital Service).
4. Measuring the right outcomes - headline statistics will always catch the media headline and pressurise politicians, so we need to make sure there are high profile, credible numbers that measure the right sorts of things.
What do you think of this quartet?
