The European Commission yesterday unveiled proposals to significantly reduce EU red tape. Many rules will be simplified to ease the burden for businesses, while other proposals are being withdrawn altogether, including suggested health and safety rules that would have banned hairdressers from wearing high heels.Liberal Democrat MEP for the East Midlands, Bill Newton Dunn commented:
"This proposal shows that the EU is capable of self-reform. If we work with our European partners, we can deliver an EU that is competitive, open and requiring fewer bureaucratic checks against fraud.
Liberal Democrats work closely with small businesses to make sure their concerns are represented in Brussels. By reducing red tape, boosting investments and making it easier for companies to trade abroad, we can help to create millions of more jobs."
John Allan, National Chairman, Federation of Small Businesses, added:
"Micro firms are disproportionately affected by and most sensitive to the costs of regulation, and we have long highlighted the problems of 'one-size-fits-all' EU laws. We therefore are happy to see moves which simplify and reduce the burden of EU regulation on small businesses."
