Retired local GP featured in book celebrating the Asian community’s contribution to the NHS

A new book that highlights the contribution made to the NHS by the Asian community was launched today in Parliament. One of the people featured in the book is retired local GP, Dr Nagendra Sarmah.

'Nurturing the Nation: The Asian Contribution to the NHS since 1948' looks at the lives and careers of Asian employees at all levels of the NHS, focusing on 40 NHS workers, who came to work in the UK from various parts of the world, and the experiences they have to share.

Dr Sarmah, a Bramhall resident, was born in Assam, north-east India, where he trained to at the Assam Medical College. Coming to UK in 1965 to complete his training, he then worked through-out the south Manchester region for thirty-six years.

Mark Hunter, Dr Sarmah's MP, was a special guest at the book launch and met with the doctor and his family and other healthcare professionals that have contributed to the book.

Commenting Mark said:

'I am delighted to have been invited to attend this book launch that recognises the contribution of the Asian community to the National Health Service. It is easy to forget that lots of the expert care we receive in our hospitals and our local doctors are provided by professionals that have moved across the world.

'Dr Sarmah's has an amazing story to tell, and his dedication and service for our communities should be commended. I am delighted to have been able to be a part of this celebration.'
