NHS England Senior Executive David Sharp has outlined the projected dates for Harborough's 'New' HospitalSpeaking as a guest speaker at a Harborough District Council Panel meeting on Thursday he confirmed that the doors of the unit should be opened in January 2016 with the first spade having been put in the ground to signify the start of construction in September 2014.
Cllr Phil Knowles who has been at the forefront of the Community Hospital Campaign for over 25 years addressed the meeting and thanked David Sharp for indications of a definite date when the long awaited, much delayed unit will finally be open to serve the community.
Cllr Knowles said ''Mr Sharp is fully aware of the many disappointments and broken promises over so many years. The people of Harborough deserve better so I am sure that he will have checked each and every detail of the forward plan unveiled at the meeting. There is no doubt that the latest delay is disappointing but finally we do now seem to have the basis of a firm commitment to build and a willingness to keep the community and council informed .
"Mr Sharp is intending to accept invitations to come to meetings in Harborough on a regular basis and update us as the scheme progresses, for my part I will do what I have done for so long. I will keep pushing and campaigning until the community has the facility that residents so richly deserve and need.
"The new Harborough Hospital is in my opinion an investment in healthcare for the 21st century, it is not an expenditure. It will make a positive contribution to not only Harborough but to the wider medical service provision as it offers the opportunity to carry out more in Harborough rather than travelling to Leicester or Kettering. The skill will be maximising Harborough's workload and balancing it against services currently offered elsewhere''
