Addressing the Annual General Meeting of Mid Derbyshire Liberal Democrats in Allestree, north of Derby, Issan Ghazni said that negative myths can be overcome on the doorstep by explaining the benefits of Europe.
He also congratulated local members who had raised £300 towards the European campaign, thanking them for the donation.
Tackling the UKIP threat, Ghazni said: "My experience tells me that voters who are Euro-sceptic often do not get to hear the other side of the argument, and when they do often they are pleasantly surprised.
"There is a vacuum of information about Europe's contribution to Britain, whether that is trade or human rights. We need to cut through voter confusion and be positive about what we believe."

Issan Ghazni made a rallying cry to activists to spread the message "In Europe, In Work", emphasising the vital role Europe plays in boosting British jobs and the economy.
He said if Liberal Democrats get out on the doorstep we can ensure Bill Newton Dunn is re-elected. Regional Chair Tony Rogers also spoke about the need for unity and common purpose.
