Speaking to the Chesterfield local party AGM, Ghazni said that the older generations valued peace in Europe because they remembered the two major wars but the Lib Dems had to work harder to persuade the younger generation, many of whom take this for granted.
Answering questions, several local members agreed that the peace dividend was an issue that needed more attention.
Issan Ghazni said: "I have personal family experience of the last war, as my father was captured and imprisoned in a Japanese prisoner of war camp. This is why I am so passionate about Europe as a guarantor of peace and prosperity in the continent."
He said it was vital that MEP Bill Newton-Dunn was re-elected to continue the fight for regional investment in the East Midlands.
"Our slogan is 'In Europe, In Work', and that is especially true when we remember how many jobs depend on Europe. Other parties want to walk away from Europe, but we must continue to put the positive case. When we do the public listen because they want an alternative to the usual anti-European rhetoric and they want to hear the other side of the argument."
Ghazni praised the Chesterfield party for their well-known activism which has led to the UK parliamentary constituency, a target seat with a great chance of winning a Lib Dem MP.
He was joined by Tony Rogers (pictured) who is President of the Chesterfield local party and Chair of the East Midlands region. Tony Rogers said Lib Dems should tackle the myths about Europe perpetrated by UKIP and many Conservatives. Several local members also spoke about the need to combat UKIP.
Ghazni offered to continue to help Chesterfield campaign for Lib Dem representation and said he was more than happy to help any local party in the East Midlands.
