High Peak Liberal DemocratsMP for Cheadle constituency, Mark Hunter, has welcomed a fall in unemployment both locally and nationally as "very encouraging news."
The latest figures from the Office of National Statistics reveal that the number of unemployed claimants in Cheadle has fallen to 862, a rate of 1.9% of the economically active population aged 16 to 64 which is one of the lowest in the North West region.
Nationally, the number of people in work has increased by 280,000 from September to November 2013, the highest quarterly increase since records began.
Commenting on the figures, Mark Hunter MP said:
"The latest numbers from the ONS are very welcome news as we begin to rebalance the economy and get things moving in the right direction. I am delighted that the already low unemployment figure in Cheadle constituency continues to fall but there is no room for complacency. We still have a long way to go, though three successive quarters of GDP growth are a promising indicator that consumer confidence is climbing and that the economy is recovering.
"Our area enjoys a strong and robust local economy built on solid foundations. The business sector, local authorities and our schools and colleges must carry on working together to support our economic recovery and help make our community an even better place to live and work."
