Rail users in South Leicestershire are stepping up their campaign for train station upgrades in Harborough and are receiving backing from East Midlands European Spokesperson Cllr Phil Knowles as Network Rail seeks views on investment plans. The draft plan seemingly includes the electrification of the Midlands Mainline covering improvements which are set to provide greater capacity for freight movements and longer passenger trains. The concern for the Harborough Rail Users Group, is that there is no apparent intention to include the straightening of the line through Harborough, rebuilding of platforms or improving accessibility, particularly to the southbound line.
Now Cllr Phil Knowles has added his voice to the campaign and expressed his support for the Rail Users. Cllr Knowles said '' I have written to Transport Minister Baroness Kramer asking that she comes to Harborough to meet with a cross section of interested parties. It is an opportunity for the Minister to see the problems on site and importantly, to hear directly the concerns and comments of the community and rail users''
