At a busy Hustings meeting on Saturday 8 February 2014, Amber Valley's local Liberal Democrats voted unanimously for Kate Smith to be their Prospective Parliamentary Candidate.Kate was brought up mainly in the Stockport area, has family connections in Tyneside and Scotland, and has lived in Amber Valley for approaching 30 years.
Kate has a Modern Languages degree from the University of Cambridge, and worked as a communication skills trainer for most of the 1980s.
Kate is married to Paul, a health and safety at work professional, and they have two sons, both students.
Her campaigning experience began in 1990 with maternity services, but since then has broadened out to the wider NHS, education, highways and transport, climate change, housing and much else, including during a 5-year period as an elected Councillor from 2003-2008.
Kate has stood for Westminster twice before, in 2001 and 2005.
Kate currently works for the National Tramway Museum, an employer she describes as "fantastically flexible".
Kate thanked the members for their vote of confidence, and, after the meeting, commented, "I'm really grateful to the activist team and to the recently increased membership as a whole - now we have work to do, so let's not wait to get on with re-electing the excellent Bill Newton Dunn to the European Parliament !"
