UKIP can't organise a conference, let alone run the country – Graham Watson MEP

Commenting on the fact that the building where UKIP are holding their party conference was partly funded by a European Grant of £3m, Liberal Democrat South West MEP Sir Graham Watson said:

"Their last conference was ruined by the antics of Godfrey Bloom, this time UKIP managed to embarrass themselves again before anyone had even uttered a word.

"UKIP can't be trusted to organise their own conference, let alone run the country.

"Being in the EU has brought huge benefits to this town. Over £7.4mn of European funding has been invested in recent years to regenerate the Torquay harbour front, build a new coastal zoo and fund local businesses, helping to create over 1300 new jobs.

"Liberal Democrats are determined to take on UKIP and protect British jobs by ensuring we stay in the EU and make the most of the opportunities it provides."

The Riveria International Centre where the UKIP conference is being help was partly funded by a European Grant of £3m

European Regional Development Funds in Torbay (2007-2013):

• Torbay - White Rock Infrastructure: £3.4 million from ERDF has co-funded infrastructure works to enable the development of employment land to create high quality business units. The development site is expected to bring forward over 300,000 sq. ft. of employment space resulting in 1300 new jobs;

• Torbay - Torquay Waterfront Regeneration - A £6.5 million investment to improve Torquay's harbour front and connect the two sides of the harbour included £2.4 million from ERDF. It has generated further investment, including £40 million from the private sector, £7 million of which is directly related to the project and has resulted in increased business use and tourism, boosting the local economy outside of the main season. A further £1.7 million of ERDF has been invested in an innovative coastal zoo set on Torquay's waterfront, which has created over 40 jobs, receives 130,000 visitors a year and injects over £3 million a year into the local economy.
