CEO of Shell says UK should remain part of the EU

The Chief Executive Officer of the oil company Shell, urges the UK to "maintain its long-established place at the heart of the European Union", stating that 'it provides greater investment stability and certainty."

Addressing the company's annual reception in London on Wednesday, he said:

"As a global business with feet planted firmly on both sides of the Channel, we believe that the UK's national interests are best served by a close relationship with Europe."

"The continent faces medium-term challenges - not least relating to its economic competitiveness. But we believe those challenges are best tackled - to the benefit of all - with the UK's voice loudly expressed and loudly heard inside the EU."

Bill Newton Dunn, Lib Dem MEP for the East Midlands commented:

"We cannot turn a blind eye to comments like this; Shell is yet again another company to add to a long list of companies that provide thousands of jobs across the UK, who have urged the UK to maintain its membership of the European Union. Siemens, Unilever, Honda and Nissan have also voiced concerns that leaving the EU would be disastrous for business in which they would have to reconsider their investments here if Britain indeed left"

"Shell employs over 6,500 people directly in the UK and 2000 British nationals work for Shell overseas in more than 50 countries; we cannot risk losing these jobs by leaving the EU"

"In the EU the United Kingdom remains as one of the key decision makers, shaping policy to look after British interests, being outside of it would mean jobs losses and no influence over what happens in Europe- we cannot let this happen."
