High Peak Liberal Democrats
Phil Knowles with the Austrian (Angelika Mlinar), and Estonia (Kaja Kallas) Members of Parliament
The gathering, included the highly respected Austrian Parliament Member Angelika Mlinar. Finance expert Maarten Smit (Netherlands) and Estonia's Kaja Kallas, a current member of the National Parliament,Chairman of the Economic Affairs Committee.
Speaking after returning from the event Cllr Phil Knowles said that it had been a great success. A chance to share ideas, discuss current world events and to explore the opportunity for wider co-operation.
"The view that we are stronger together and weaker apart came through loud and clear. Varied views on the exact way forward with an acceptance that some things need to change but an absolute commitment that these changes are best achieved by working together.
"It was clear the importance that colleagues place upon the UK being at the heart of the European Union. The very real value they place upon the UK being at the table for decision making, planning for the future and growth of the EU.
"It was equally clear that there is a genuine concern about a potential future without the UK at the heart of the Union, how this would impact on the future direction of the EU and the negative impact such a move could have on jobs and investment in the UK.
"We have to redouble our efforts to ensure that the importance of the UK staying in the EU is delivered to every home and factory and is explained in detail to every member of our community. We simply cannot afford to sleep walk out of the EU, for our country and community the fall out of such a move would be devastating.
"The deeply concerning and developing situation in Ukraine was as you would expect a key subject of discussion amongst delegates. Collective strength, structured ongoing dialogue and the need to redouble the diplomatic efforts via the European Union were the clear messages.''
Cllr Phil Knowles is a leading member of the European Team here in the East Midlands and readily available to assist in campaigning. Taking the message to the homes and businesses across the region.
