Mark Hunter MP welcomes Cheshire East Council’s go-ahead for A555

Cheadle MP Mark Hunter has welcomed the news that Cheshire East council has now finally given planning permission for the long awaited and much needed A555 Relief Road. Stockport Council and Manchester City Council had already given their approval earlier this year, but it was necessary for all three councils to give final approval before the project could go ahead.

The Relief Road proposals have been consulted on several times over the years and local residents have consistently given an overwhelming 'yes' to the scheme which will link the A6 to Manchester Airport and thus reduce the volumes of traffic currently using local residential roads. The road scheme is backed by all major political parties locally, as well as by the Chamber of Commerce and Manchester Airport.

Speaking after the news was revealed, Mark Hunter said:

'I'm delighted that Cheshire East Council has finally given their formal backing after some unnecessary delay. These proposals are now backed by all the local authorities in the area and I want to see a start made, on the ground, as soon as possible. Local people have already waited for too long and there must be no more delays.'

Following support from the Coalition Government, the go-ahead for the Relief Road was announced by the Chief Secretary to the Treasury, Danny Alexander MP, in 2011. Contractors have been appointed already and work is scheduled to start within the next twelve months.
