High Peak Liberal DemocratsBaxter Park and Brookside Tennis Club, in Gatley, celebrated their opening this weekend with dozens of members, players and well-wishers touring the new facilities.
A £230,000 refurbishment has been spent on a club house with changing-rooms, four new adult courts and a court specifically designed for children, transforming the club into a high quality and modern sports facility for local people to enjoy.
With most activities starting in May, the club is keen to attract new members of all ages and levels. For children, coaching will be on Tuesday evenings and a tennis-camp is planned for the summer holidays. For adults, social tennis will be held on Wednesday evenings and Saturday afternoons. Tournaments will take place once a month, with an augural tournament on Saturday 5 April. Everyone is welcome to attend.
Local MP, Mark Hunter, who opened the new courts on Saturday, said:
'It was my great pleasure to be asked to open Baxter Park and Brookside Tennis Club, and to tour the new courts which look fantastic. Credit must go to the Cheshire LTA, the Club's members and their supporters in realising this long-term but highly worthwhile project. I would encourage interested local residents to visit the Club and have a game or two; they can be assured of a friendly welcome from the current members.'
Ken McWilliam, club organiser, said:
'We have been working on the refurbishment of the club for over five years and are thrilled with the result. Now, we are just keen that people come along, take advantage of the great facilities and enjoy themselves.'
The club's full address is Baxter Park and Brookside Tennis Club, Highcrest Avenue, SK8 4HD. Contact Ken McWilliam on 0161 428 6635 or at mcwilliam.ken@btinternet.com for more details.
