European Spokesperson Cllr Phil Knowles has voiced sympathy for community pubs and the role that they play at the heart of many communities across the UK and the contribution they make to both employment and the overall economy. ''CAMRA as a consumer group with 160,000 members acts as an independent voice for real ale drinkers and pub goers. They tell us that the industry supports over 900,000 jobs, 1100 small breweries and contributes over £20 billion to the UK GDP each year.
"Working closely with the industry potentially offers the chance to secure improvements. There are for example opportunities to enhance the labelling of the products whereby the origin of the ingredients can be clearly and concisely listed. The chance to provide the consumer with more detailed information on the products being consumed
"I know just how much commitment and work goes in to running a pub. Long, often unsociable hours. Seeking to find a variety of 'uses for the pub' to create a community hub.
"I strongly advocate support for the sensible drinking campaign in a responsible environment. I would also take every opportunity to encourage the powers that be to take steps to protect the jobs, the contribution to the economy and the community pubs. Pubs that offer so much to the lives of so many of our communities with a variety of activities and services''.
