High Peak Liberal DemocratsFrom this September every child in infant school in England will receive a free school lunch; in Stockport alone this will mean 10,000 children will benefit.
Local MP, Mark Hunter, and Councillor June Somekh recently visited Cheadle Catholic Infant School in Cheadle Hulme to meet with Headteacher, Mrs Lofthouse, and staff to talk about the implementation of the policy. The discussion revolved around a number of practical measures that need to be taken to ensure the lunches can be delivered in time for September.
Commenting after the meeting, Mark said:
"I really appreciated the opportunity to talk with Mrs Lofthouse and staff over some of their concerns. I am pleased to say that school leaders and Stockport Council are working hard to deliver free school meals to all infants in Cheadle constituency come September.
"Free school meals for all 4 to 7 year olds is great news for millions of parents across the country that are feeling the squeeze. During the course of a year, the average family spends £400 on lunch for each child, and we as Liberal Democrats are determined to ease the financial burden for these families and give every child the chance in life that they deserve, building a stronger economy and a fairer society."
