High Peak Liberal DemocratsThis month's commemorations of the 70th anniversary of D-Day were an opportunity to remember those that gave their lives to liberate France and the rest of Europe from Nazi tyranny, and to sincerely thank the surviving veterans that served on those momentous days.
The Expeditionary Force that mustered just off the south coast in the early hours of 6th June 1944 were a collective of nations, predominately British, American and Canadian along with displaced Europeans and groups from around the British Empire. These men were united in their desire not for glory, but simply to get the dangerous job done and then return safely to their families. Their humble willingness to answer such a call as they did is an example to us all, and they represent what incredible feats can be achieved when countries join together in a common cause. It is hard to comprehend their bravery, or how much we owe them.
Thanks are also due to those that serve today in the British Army, the Royal Air Force, or as in the case of my nephew, the Royal Navy. Often separated from their families for long periods, their career of choice takes them across the world, ambassadors for our country and protecting our way of life.
Acknowledgement too for those that care for our veterans once they return home. I think of the Royal British Legion whose work does not stop on 11th November, but who provide assistance all year round to our local service families, and the Help for Heroes charity who have stepped up so remarkably during the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan to support those injured in conflict.
As in countless homes and workplaces across the country, my grandfather's campaign medals are displayed in pride of place, his earned during his time in the Royal Marines during the Second World War. It is down to all of us that live on, to remember them.
